What Else Do I Do Now?

I am a funeral celebrant. To those readers unaware, this means that I take funeral services, mainly at a crematorium, for families who don’t necessarily require religious content. Someone who is a Humanist is strictly secular, but I see my role more as one that says the words on behalf of the family. I don’t dictate, just ask what they want. So if they want the Lord’s Prayer included, then that’s fine by me, the same as Hymns.

When receiving instructions from the Funeral director, I contact the family, have a chat, introduce myself, while making an appointment to go round to see them. Quite often these days they require an order of service to be provided, so I discuss the content, what order everything is going to be said in, and also the music. This usually takes an hour, and I frequently have a cup of tea, as it creates a more relaxed atmosphere.

Why do funeral directors like to use me? Because I am old school, a safe pair of hands, because I liaise with them at all stages, so they don’t have any nasty surprises. When I turn up to conduct the service, I have comprehensive notes, am on very good terms with the family, and am prepared for any eventuality. It makes such a difference, having that personal touch. It also makes such a difference to the funeral director, because they know that their family is in the hands of an experienced professional, one who doesn’t get fazed if something out of the ordinary occurs. I anticipate problems, therefore they don’t happen... too often!
